2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Response
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a distinct game identity.
The president stated that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full content from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to mind and reimagined the title with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our fans.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. After some time of conversations, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having dedicated the recent years developing and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all excited to persist witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.
The President

Title Details and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Face the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and tests that change every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."
The game lacks an announced debut schedule or consoles, but players can look forward to additional details as production advances.
